Tom Hanks has a highly successful film back catalogue, which is almost as long as the massive coat he wears in the first glimpse of Bridge of Spies, the new film from best buddy and baseball cap wearing Steven Spielberg.
With hugely dark and mysterious undertones and a thumping soundtrack featuring a man who can only play the piano with one finger, Bridge of Spies tells the story of James Donovan (Tom Hanks), a Brooklyn based insurance claims lawyer who is thrown head first into the middle of the Cold War (good job he has that massive coat), when he is assigned by the CIA to negotiate the release of a captured American U2 bomber pilot. This is a nearly impossible task thanks to the relationship between the USA and Russia being at near breaking point, but Donovan must head straight into the lion’s den, with the eyes of the whole world watching him.
Written by Matt Charman and the Coen Brothers, and also starring Mark Rylance, Scott Shepherd, Sebastian Koch (stop it immediately) and Amy Ryan, Bridge of Spies is due for release in the UK on the 6th of November. The story is inspired by true events, which means almost nothing that happens in the film happened in real life.
