The Talk – Review *****

There’s one day in the life of every parent that the dreaded Talk needs to happen – and if you think you know what we’re talking about, well, you’re wrong. Because you won’t even see it coming in this fantastic short film by director Joe Otting, The Talk, deservedly picked by the Vimeo staff and now doing the rounds on the Internet. We swear – these will be 8 minutes much better spent than playing Candy Crush.

With two actors, one (dinner) room and a cleverly twisted, evil script, penned by apparently newbie David I. Jenkins and designed solely with the intent of making fun of all audience expectations, Otting has shown that there’s no need for helicopter explosions or period costume to make a great short film. Of course, having actors of the caliber of John Hoogenakker (a TV regular who certainly makes an impression in this film) and child prodigy Isabella Crovetti-Cramp (Joy; Colony) does help, but Otting shows he knows very well how to make the very best of high quality material. With more turns and twists than a rollercoaster, The Talk may feel like a sketch at times, but the careful, sober way it is filmed, punctuated by a good soundtrack and perfect timing comedy editing (that fortunately goes for the laughs and performance and not for the boring continuity) makes it a memorable cinematic experience.

And as telling the story would be to spoil it, have a look, enjoy, and wonder why can’t we watch shorts more often (and thank the gods for the online platforms that allows to do it). We just hope you guys are old enough to handle it.
