Fresh from the Best Actor Oscar for his incredible transformation as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, Eddie Redmayne will take on another iconic historical figure in the form of artist and transgender trailblazer Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, the trailer for which is now online.
Adapted from David Ebershoff’s book by screenwriter Lucinda Coxon, the film is inspired by Elbe’s life and marriage to Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander). With a supporting cast including Ben Whishaw, Sebastian Koch, Amber Heard and Matthias Schoenarts, the film will be eagerly anticipated and likely to feature during awards season. Director Tom Hooper has a golden touch with the Academy, winning Best Director for The King’s Speech in 2010 and directed Anne Hathaway to glory for Les Misérables. This marks his second collaboration with Redmayne.
The Danish Girl has been a long developing project, with numerous directorial and casting changes over the years, with actors ranging from Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron attached to the roles, and Tomas Alfredson, Bill Condon and others in the director’s chair at various stages. Hooper’s decision to cast Redmayne as Elbe where his predecessors previously cast female stars could prove to be a masterstroke, and with greater awareness of transgender role models and gender fluidity in today’s society, its release could hardly be more timely.
The Danish Girl is out in UK Cinemas New Year’s Day 2016.
