2012 saw one of the most blatant, ‘lets make as much money out of the success of the first film’ films for many years, the all round pretty rubbish Taken 2. it had a terrible plot, weak bad guys, and a very poor script, but still made $374 million world wide. The first film in 2008 was brilliant in its concept, and it’s delivery, but it was a film that should have been left to retire gracefully as a stand alone hit.
Clearly Liam Neeson also felt that doing a second film was simply a money spinner, because when asked about doing a third, he said “I don’t see it. I don’t think it’s going to happen. I really don’t. I can’t see a possible scenario where audiences wouldn’t go, ‘Oh, come on…! She’s taken again?'”
But cut to June 2013, and it looks like someone waving a large see-through bag of money in front of his eyes has quickly changed his mind, and a third film is definitely on the cards. Luc Besson and his writing partner Robert Mark Kamen are already at work on a new script, hoping to better their main plot idea from the second film, of Liam trying to work out where his daughter is, by getting her to lob grenades out of windows so he can hear the explosions, and time how far away he was from them.
Quite what will happen this time is a mystery, as Liam whacked every bad guy there has ever been in the sequel, so they will need to find a new way for him to annoy another evil henchman and his large family of mercenaries. There’s little news as to who will direct the third installment, or whether Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen, Liam’s long suffering but surprisingly handy with a weapon daughter and wife are on board, but Besson is aiming to start filming in February. This film, if as bad as the second, can at least say that it spawned from the brilliant original, which has one of the best ever angry dad quotes spoken on film:
“I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you’re looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that will be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you.”
