As soon as you see a film advertising itself for release ‘this Christmas’, you know it’s going to be a feel good, romantic, everything works out in the end sort of movie. Yesterday saw a new international trailer release for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which definitely has that sort of feel about it.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is directed by and stars Ben Stiller, as a man who clearly is not very interesting, and has trouble even recalling anything interesting ever happening to him. He does however have an extrodinary imagination, and frequently finds himself ‘zoned out’, as he imagines himself doing extraordinary things, such as diving off a station platform through an apartment window to rescue a small puppy before said apartment explodes. But Walter quickly comes crashing back down to reality, especially when it comes to his mundane job in the picture department of Life Magazine.
But when a negative intended for the magazine’s final cover sent by his old photographer pal Sean O’Connell (Sean Penn) goes missing, Walter decides it’s time to make his fantasies a reality, and heads off on a mission to track it down.It will mean that he’ll finally have an actual real life adventure, and it could give him the courage to ask out co-worker Cheryl (Kristen Wiig), instead of using social media to ‘wink’ at her. (It’s a Christmas feel good movie, of course he’ll find the courage.)
The cast for the film also includes Adam Scott, Shirley MacLaine, Kathryn Hahn, and Patton Oswalt, and is due for release in the UK on the 26th of December.
