Latest Nymphomaniac Clip in YouTube Controversy

Some movie titles have an element of mystery about them, giving no clues away as to the plot or theme of the film. Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac is not one of these films. It is about sex. Lots of sex. Sex involving that bloke out of Transformers (Shia LaBeouf).

The latest trailer to appear on YouTube has caused internet chins to wag all over the world, having been removed for it’s sexually explicit content (cue hordes of teenage boys typing ‘banned Nympho trailer’ into Google).

The short trailer is from Nymphomaniac’s fifth “chapter”, Little Organ School. Whether this is meant to be hilarious school boy innuendo is anyone’s guess, but it follows on from previous chapter titles The Compleat Angler (not a spelling mistake), Jerôme (not the floppy haired man from Soldier Soldier), Mrs. H and Delirium.

The scenes that led to a YouTube meltdown and almost destroyed the entire internet as we know it  (this may be a slight exaggeration for dramatic effect) involve a sex scene between LaBeoff and Stacy Martin (who plays a younger version of Charlotte Gainsbourg’s main female character, Joe), as well as scenes with Martin and an older man.

Nymphomaniac chronicles the life journey of self-diagnosed sex addict Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg),  from her birth until the age of fifty. The movie skips back and forward throughout her life, and introduces the audience to a large number of different characters. The cast also includes Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Jamie Bell, Stellan Skarsgard, Udo Kier, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Mia Goth, Nicolas Bros and Connie Nielsen. The film is due for release on Christmas Day in Norway, with the release date for the UK set to be in early 2014.

Christian started writing film reviews at school for a local paper. Since then he has written for BBC Radio 4's Newsjack and The London Film Review. He also writes and presents a comedy show on AbingdonXtra, an Oxfordshire based radio station.
