First trailer for 12 Years A Slave

The first trailer has been released for 12 Years a Slave, the historical drama most likely to win the Best Film Oscar next year (our early guess).

The film is based on the autobiography by Soloman Northup, a free man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery.

Directed by Steve McQueen (Shame, Hunger) and with an all-star cast – Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti and Chiwetel Ejiofor (who will play Soloman), 12 Years is set to be a big hit.

Other stars include Quvenzhané Wallis, our favourite young actress from Beasts of the Southern Wild (for which she was also Oscar-nominated) and Alfre Woodard (The Help).

After the success of Django Unchained and Lincoln at last year’s Oscars and then considering the success of The Help in 2011, the topic of slavery is one that America welcomes with open arms.

12 Years a Slave will be released in the UK on 24th January 2014.
