“Can you smell what The Rock is cooking?” is a question that has crossed the minds of many wrestling fans since The Rock made his debut in the wrestling ring in 1996. This question has changed in recent years to “Can you guess what run of the mill action film The Rock is making?”, as he made the move from wrestling super-stardom to movie action hero. The Rock, or Dwayne Johnson as he prefers to now be known (as let’s face it, being called The Rock is stupid), is this decades version of Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is big, mean, muscular, and the all round iconic action hero that comic books and stories have portrayed since they first began.
The latest big screen adventure that Johnson has been signed up for is Seal Team 666. Based on the book by Weston Ochse, with Evan Spiliotopoulos behind the screenplay, Johnson is to star as an all action Navy Seal. It is also rumoured that Johnson will be executive producer for the film, which has been billed as a supernatural action thriller.
Known as the best of the best, Navy Seals are a special ops team, that are only called upon for the most dangerous and secretive missions. This particular mission involves supernatural forces, demons and possessed humans, hence the title to the film. Johnson and his crack team of Navy Seals soon find out that there are evil forces out there, hell bent on destroying the earth, and it’s up to them to stop them.
Cinemas at the moment are drowning in a sea of supernatural, superhero, super heavy CGI laden films, and this one sounds like another of the same. However, if audiences seem to be lapping up such films, then why carry on the trend? There is no director on board yet for Seal Team 666, but MGM and Macmillan Films are keen to get production under way as soon as possible, with a possible release date of summer 2014.
