Captain Phillips to open 57th BFI London Film Festival 9th – 20th Oct

It has been announced that Captain Phillips will make its European premier by opening the BFI London Film Festival on Wednesday 9th October at Odeon Leicester Square, 9 days before it’s official UK release.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Paul Greengrass (United 93, The Bourne Ultimatum), the film will examine the true story of the 2009 hijacking of US container ship Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates – the first incident of its kind in over 200 years. Starring Tom Hanks as the titular Captain Richard Phillips and Barkhad Abdi as his Somalian counterpart who holds him hostage.

Hanks and Brit Greengrass, who is a huge supporter of English film, are both expected to make appearances at the festival. See the trailer before for a look at what’s in store.
